There was an article where I proclaimed that the future belongs to the tapper. This was looking at the advantages of tapping over swiping on a smartphone touchscreen.
Well the technology is what excites me.
When (if?) this LG technology catches on, then, we can most all become gesticulator instead of swipers / tappers.
Text entity would be as speedy as you can gesticulate, and for some, that would be like bullet speed .. a lot better than current swiping or tapping speeds.
But apparently, it would appear that “voice to text” input could get more ubiquitous – as it keeps improving, and even some day get incorporated directly into the Operating System in such a way that any application that needs user input can tap into that functionality – automatically, without explicitly having to use something like the Google text-to-speech API functionality..
I get to a test field that accepts input, have a way to indicate I want to use voice, and I do that Bliss.
We need to see much further into the future.. a future that appears imminent.
Voice to text is the future.
Who needs a keyboard application when he can choose to talk and have software convert it into text?
I think Keyboard apps as the current toy operate are going to go into reduced relevance, some day.
Operating systems should simply make it possible to use voice anywhere text is needed as an input – automatically, if the user chooses.

Voice to text has its place. Yes.
But the person that tries that voice thing at Ojuelegba, Lagos, is on their own.
I would not be surprised if s/he is mistaken for a schizophrenic patient, and probably hauled to a psychiatric hospital. I don’t think it is easy to voice operate a phone while outside the confines of your home / office .

I think speech to text will always play second fiddle as long as there is vocal diversity among human beings.
Text input will predominantly continue to be via human phalanges, and swiping or tapping will still be the dominant approach.
The variation in human voice and different intonations across geographical locations even within the same language like English will ensure physical entry through keyboard applications predominate as the main text input into a smartphone.
How will the Google TTS be able to resolve an Igbo man’s emu-tee-en into MTN or a Yoruba man’s jeer into gear, for instance?
How about the Akwa Ibom man’s yampion for Champion, or, a Hausa man’s kwontry for country.?
That’s too much of a handful for software to handle effectively and still remain practical.
Yes, despite training voice translation apps with individual voices, it would probably never be capable of handling all voice types, but it will sure reduce the tedium of physical tapping / swiping significantly..
Imagine being able to open your car or home door with your voice. No need for keys, switching off or home almost any home appliances, etc.
While we await the day when the text-to-speech embedding will be more Operating System skin_deep, perhaps more apps would emulate the Whatsapp Example or Google Assistant’s.
It would be a big relief for messages to no longer need to be typed.. dictation being a smarter keyboard at work
