Ambling Into Gambling Is Amblyopia

True Luck Consists Not In Holding The Best Of The Cards At The Table; Luckiest Is He Who Knows Just When To Rise And Go Home.

So, somebody wistfully says,

In the past 2 months, the value of 1 Bitcoin has doubled. From 800k to 1. 6 Million.

Why did I refuse to invest oooo.?

And somebody retorted,

That’s actually not investment. It is more of gambling.. Such escapades are full of uncertainties.

500 Million could become a 100 Million within the same period, just like it could also have eroded to 100 Million as well.

And somebody countered,

Then all investments are some form of gambling if you want to go in that direction.

I agree. Somewhat.

There doesn’t seem to be a clear line of demarcation between what constitutes an investment as opposed to gambling like foreX trading.

Perhaps we can say,

Gambling is putting down money on something you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OR INFLUENCE OVER?

Another school of thought defines things thus,

To play at any game (business) of chance for stakes. To stake or risk money, or anything of value, on the outcome of something involving CHANCE.

To put money to use, by purchase or expenditure, in something offering profitable returns.

When you put down money that President Trump of the USA would not conclude his term before he gets impeached, we can agree that’s gambling, as there is not much you can do directly to influence that happening.

When you buy the shares of a company where you neither work, do not sit on the Board nor influence in any meaningful way, you could be said to be gambling.

When you hand over your money to somebody else to use in business, without any input, influence or control whatsoever, that’s not investment – that’s pure gambling.

Most true investments also have some elements of gambling, though, as no one invests in real estate or financial instruments to see the value of their input erode quickly.

The purchase of financial products and the placement of savings is most often a balancng act – on a scale that has many variations in terms of risks versus rewards (potential profits).
Nobody has a crystal ball in determining with complete certainly what the result of a business venture or investment would be.

To that extent. there is some small element of
gambling in any investment .

It looks like we can then safely conclude that,

Gambling is a necessary minute part  of investing, but investing without any form of influence, input, or control is pure gambling.
