A writer is a god

Of all the creative endeavours, my favourite is writing. Whether poetry, drama or fiction it gives the best kind of leeway and freedom. I’ll explain how.

Wikipedia defines Creative writing as any writing that goes outside the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature, typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics.

As a creative artist based on writing, you are only limited by your imagination. You can create entire civilizations, planets, states of being; you can create anything out of your head.

Books like Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and so on created entire civilizations, spanned continents and the timelines lasted decades. These authors had vast imaginations and using the power of words they invite you and give you a glimpse into a little slice of what is going on in their heads.

Do you know why many people will always prefer novels to their film and TV adaptations? It is because the journey the narrative takes the brain to with imagery, no amount of 3D High Definition TV can. That much level of detail, that world-building awesomeness, it is power beyond any known. You let your imaginations roam wild, and you make the reader have a nice sharp and clear window through which to view these fantasies. You go on a wild journey and you take your readers with you. Wherever you are, you let them be there with you. You let them feel the hustle and bustle of a busy street, let them feel the serenity of a quiet village or hamlet, let them feel the opulence of a rich man’s house, let them feel the atmosphere and smell the drugs and disinfectant of a hospital building. Make them experience it like they were there, with you!

No visual adaptation whether in cinemas or on the sharpest TV can take the audience to that level, but your skills can. You control a universe, galaxies, seasons, planets, nature, animals, plants and anything you deem fit to think of, even things that did not previously exist you can create them. Everything in your work is your subject to do as you please. As a creative writer, you are a god.

This kind of experience cannot be replicated via any other means. This one is not hampered by budget considerations or technological advances. Whatever you want your audience to see, feel, or imagine is within your control. This is the power of creative writing.

If such is a skill you possess. I envy you. You should hone it.

And this is why I.would generally rather read about something than watch it on tv.

Meanwhile, if there is creative writing, shouldn’t there be destructive reading? 😉

    Hmm….
True words. Nothing beats a well constructed creative writing. And books have always been the lure to many true brains from time immemorial. When I look at today’s generation with the love for films and reality shows, I shake my head in sorrow. We need to go back to the good ol’ books (hard or soft copies) if we are to have fertile imaginations.
